At Norwich Road Academy we value the power of reading and do our utmost to ensure all children leave the academy as confident readers, with a love of books.

The ability to read is a life essential, opens door ways to other subjects and helps us navigate successfully through life.

The vending machine at Norwich Road Academy doesn’t’ contain sweets or chocolates.  It is full of books!  Once children have reached 500 reads, as part of our reading rewards, they receive a token to choose a book of their choice.

Your child’s reading journey begins as soon as they start school. We follow the Little Wandle phonics programme and as part of this, children are given a reading book that is fully decodable as soon as they are able to blend. They take this book home and keep it for a week to ensure they can read it fluently.

We value your support as parents and want you to be able to help your child enjoy books and become an independent reader.  We have recorded two videos of children reading with their class teacher so that you can use the strategies seen to support your child at home.

In the first video a year five child is reading and you can see how the child is supported by the teacher helping with some unknown words and also using questioning to check his understanding of the book and make sure it has the right level of challenge.

In the second video shows one of our Reception children reading. When hearing a child read, we not only look at the text but also, look at the first page of the book to check the child knows their sounds, can read the tricky words and understands the meaning of some new words they might be introduced to. We encourage the children to make predictions and ask questions to check for understanding.

We are able to provide advice and guidance to you, if you need any further support in helping your child on their reading journey.  If you have a question, please get in touch with your child’s teacher.

Happy Reading!
