Early Reading Skills

A love of reading lasts a lifetime...

From babies to children in their early years and all the way through to early teens, reading brings profound and wide-ranging benefits that can have a lifelong positive impact on children’s lives.

As a bonding activity, shared reading in their early years supports the development of a child's attachment (how safe, secure and trusting they feel around their parent or carer). Attachment is essential to a child’s future happiness, social competence, and ability to form meaningful connections. The availability of their parent or carer during shared reading contributes to a child’s sense of safety.  We advise that all parents and carers regulalry read with their children to develop an early love of reading.

To promote the love of reading we promote a wide range of reading activities for our children to enjoy and benefit from.

  • Sharing Stories - Adults will read stories to the class, small groups or 1:1 with a child.
  • Partner reading - Children have the opportunity to read books together
  • Wide range of books - our nursery has a wide range of fiction and non ficiton books for the children to look at.  During the year, some of these books change to support the current topic.
  • Rhymes - Children will learn and sing rhymes daily
  • Lending Library - Children can borrow books, games and puzzles from our lending library
  • School Library - Children have the opportunity to visit the school library every week, look at different books and listen to stories.
  • Talk for Writing - Nursery follow 'Talk for Writing' approach, learning to retell simple stories and use this for a basis to make their own stories
  • Early Phonics Skills -Nursery follow the Little Wandle Phonics programme, where they are taught to listen to a range of sounds and start to learn initial letter sounds, how to blend and repeat rhyming words
  • Helicopter Stories - We believe every child is a story teller.  Children have the opportunity to tell their story to an adult, who will scribe their ideas word for word.  The children then act our their story to the class.

Lending Library

The nursery has a 'Lending Library' available each week.  Children and their families are able to borrow a range of books, games and puzzles.  Looking at books together and reading with your child helps to promote a love for reading.
